THE RE-STRINGING OF A FRENCH CHAIR.

(pic.1) This shows the French chair once the old string has been removed. Old nails and wood splinters have been removed from the seat rails and any rough areas have been smoothed ready for re-stringing.

(pic.2) Because the seat is wider at the front it is necessary to weave more turns on the front than the back in order to make the pattern square.

(pic.3) Once the pattern is square equal turns are taken around the front, back and sides this forms the V shape in the pattern. As a result of the extra weaving in step one the side rails will be filled in before the front and back rails. It is therefore necessary to finish the pattern by weaving from back to front which causes the staight line between the points of the two V's.
